Today I found that using props in children’s photos is great because it sparks imagination and the kiddos just start role playing and have fun. Most of the time they even forget you’re there, let alone taking photos of them – and you capture nice, natural smiles and energy. The flip side to all this spontinaity is that you loose a good amount of control and you just have to let go of your planning and ideas and just roll with it. I took these photos in my backyard today within an area of about 8′ X 10′. I now really want to look for a more open field location and invest in a nice, fast, 50mm or 85mm prime lens. battling the shadows and fading sun proved to be a challenge today.

From today.
